The KYB Strut-Plus Question That Almost Cost Us the Real Job
At 3:42 p.m. on a Tuesday in March 2024, I almost turned a real emergency into a fake solution. The emergency was a cracked tool. The fake solution would have been a confident opinion about a product I do not make, test, or support.
I’m a rush-order coordinator at a metal-forming and tooling company that supplies automotive Tier 1 and Tier 2 manufacturers. In nine years, I’ve handled 200+ urgent jobs, including same-week die repairs and overnight prototype brackets. That day I was in my element — until the conversation left my element.
A brake vacuum pump kit bracket and a deadline I could meet
The first part of the request was straightforward. A customer’s stamping die had cracked. They needed a replacement insert plus a short run of stamped brackets that go into a brake vacuum pump kit. Normal lead time for a new tool insert is six to eight weeks. They had 36 hours before their final inspection.
I had already reviewed the 3D model before the call. The insert was complex enough to require some late-night machining, but the job was doable. We had the steel, the machine time, and a heat treater who picks up the phone after midnight. I told the buyer we could ship 300 pieces by 6 a.m. Thursday.
Then she asked the question I wasn’t ready for.
“Have you seen the KYB Strut-Plus front assembly reviews? We’re considering that product for another program, and I need a second opinion.”
I almost said, “Yes, I’ve heard they’re solid.”
It’s the kind of answer people want in a time crunch. It sounds helpful. It also has no data behind it. I am not a suspension engineer, and I don’t interpret damper testing. I was about to put my name on something I couldn’t defend.
“I’m the wrong person for that one,” I said. “I can tell you whether the stamped components meet print. I can’t tell you whether a complete KYB Strut-Plus front assembly is right for a vehicle I’ve never driven.”
The silence lasted a few seconds. Then she said, “Honestly, that’s the first straight answer I’ve gotten today.”
The die insert shipped at 5:47 a.m. Thursday. The short-run parts passed inspection. The order became a reference for a bigger project two months later.
There is something satisfying about watching a rush order go out on time. But the part I remember best is the ten seconds I chose not to answer.
Why I keep drawing the same line
The same rule applies when someone asks about KYB bike suspension. I get the appeal: it has valves, springs, and dampers, so it must be close to a road strut. It isn’t. Motorcycle suspension works under a different set of loads and packaging constraints. If I pretend to know the technical crossover, I’m not helping; I’m adding noise.
A few days later, another customer asked if we could quote a 350 camshaft. Another polite “no” was needed. We have CNC lathes and can machine shaft-like parts, but a 350 camshaft is not a generic shaft. Lobe profile, heat treatment, journal indexing — those decisions matter at speed. I’m not an engine calibration specialist. I don’t have a dyno in my office. The honest answer was to send them to an engine builder, not to pretend we could wing it.
And if you ask “how much fuel pump cost,” I’ll ask you one question back: which pump, which application, and which level of validation? The price of a generic aftermarket pump is not the same as a fuel pump that has to survive a 10-year OEM service life. Both are legitimate, but they are different decisions.
That is the lesson I keep re-learning. In an emergency, time is short, but shortcuts are not the same thing as speed. The fastest way to solve a problem is often to admit where your expertise begins and ends. Once you do that, the customer can call the right person instead of losing another day with the wrong one.
The question that saved me wasn’t “can we make it?” It was “should we be the one making this decision?”
