A car that cranks slowly can be a tired battery. A car that starts on a jump and then dies, or that runs with the battery light glowing, is usually a charging system problem. But the symptoms overlap more than people admit.
- Battery symptoms: slow cranking, dash lights dim while starting, accessories lose power when the engine is off, and the vehicle needs another jump after sitting for a few hours.
- Alternator symptoms: the battery light stays on while driving, headlights brighten when you rev the engine, or the voltage reading at the battery sits below 13 volts with the engine running.
We learned this the hard way with a Ford Transit in our fleet. The driver reported a slow crank. The recommendation was a new battery, and I approved it because the battery tested low. We installed it, and the van ran for about three weeks before it died again. The second tow showed an alternator charging at roughly 12.9 volts. When we priced both routes for a pair of front struts on one of our high-mileage vehicles, the complete KYB assemblies cost more in parts. That was expected. - A full brake kit makes sense when the rotor has a deep lip, is near minimum thickness, or already has thickness variation that causes the pedal to pulse.
A rotor that is already at or below its stamped minimum thickness cannot be fixed by new pads. Installing new pads on a worn-out rotor just delays the brake job and doubles the labor when the rotor finally needs to be replaced. I know this because we did exactly that on a delivery vehicle. The first invoice looked small. The second invoice, three months later, was larger than the full kit would have been on day one.
There is also a safety angle that a cost spreadsheet can't capture. If a vehicle is used for daily deliveries, a brake redo is not just parts and labor—it's downtime. Downtime on a working vehicle is the hidden line item that nobody writes down until it happens.
My rule now: measure the rotor before choosing. If the measurement is borderline, choose the full brake kit. The additional cost is smaller than the cost of a second teardown.
KYB Suspension on the Tenere 700: Maintenance Before Upgrades
The Tenere 700 comparison is a little different because you're not choosing between KYB and something else. The Yamaha Tenere 700 leaves the factory with KYB suspension: a 43 mm inverted fork up front and a KYB rear shock. That's a solid starting point.
Still, a lot of riders conclude that the suspension needs upgrading before they have done the basic work. The comparison should be:
- Set sag and adjust the stock damping for your weight.
- Service the fork and shock with fresh fluid and correct oil levels.
- Install springs matched to a heavier rider or heavy luggage load.
- Send the suspension out for a re-valve or install aftermarket cartridges.
Notice the order. The cheapest step comes first. In my experience, many Tenere 700 owners are riding with incorrect sag for their body weight. That makes the stock KYB suspension feel softer or harsher than it actually is. Once the sag is set and the fluid is fresh, the bike often handles well enough that the expensive upgrade is no longer urgent.
If a rider is heavily loaded for an expedition, a spring upgrade and re-valve are worth the money. But if a trip is weeks away, time certainty matters. Sending suspension parts to a specialist with a long lead time can turn a planned departure into a rushed chase for parts. In that case, the more reliable choice is to service what you have and adjust it properly.
To me, the KYB suspension on the Tenere 700 is not the weak link that forum threads sometimes make it seem. The weak link is usually setup, not hardware.

Vibration that appears at idle, or when shifting gears, is often diagnosed as a suspension or wheel problem. Sometimes it's an engine mount. That mistake costs money because a new strut or a wheel balance won't fix a worn mount.
In aviation, the same logic shows up in a component called a dynafocal engine mount. The mount's elastomeric bushings are angled so the engine can rotate slightly around its own center of gravity. That setup isolates the engine's firing pulses instead of sending them through the airframe. It works because geometry and bushing compliance are engineered, not guessed.
If you replace that kind of mount with a generic universal mount that only matches the bolt pattern, the angles are wrong. The engine transmits more vibration, fasteners loosen over time, and you eventually pay for a second repair. The same principle applies to cars and light trucks: an engine mount is a tuned component. Matching the bolt holes is not the same as matching the isolation behavior.
A proper replacement can cost more than a universal mount. But in my experience, a cheap mount that changes vibration behavior simply moves the problem to another part of the vehicle. It's one more example of a part that looks cheaper until it gets reordered.
Bottom Line: Buy Certainty, Not Just Parts
All of these comparisons lead to the same conclusion. The premium worth paying is not for a fancier brand. It's for certainty that the root cause is gone.
- If you're not sure whether it's your battery or alternator, test first. The test costs less than the part you might buy by mistake.
- If struts are worn on a high-mileage vehicle, choose a complete KYB strut assembly. Rebuilding makes sense only when the original spring and mount are still young.
- If brake rotors are marginal, install a full brake kit. Pad-only work is a reasonable decision only when the rotor measurement supports it.
- If you ride a Tenere 700, set sag and service the KYB suspension before spending money on internal upgrades.
- If an engine mount needs replacement, respect the original design—including the angles of a dynafocal engine mount.
I don't think the expensive option is always smarter. I've approved plenty of budget parts when the application was simple and the diagnosis was certain. But after six years of looking at repair history, I can tell you which parts cost the most: the ones that didn't fix the problem.
If you ask me, a parts order isn't complete when it arrives. It's complete when the repair invoice closes and the same issue doesn't come back.
