FCS vs KYB Struts: Why I'd Still Choose KYB Gas Struts

I'll say it plainly: if a customer asked me to choose between FCS vs KYB struts for a daily driver, I'd choose KYB—and I'd pay the difference myself. That isn't brand loyalty. It's the result of four years of reviewing incoming parts before they get anywhere near a customer's car.

Because the ball joint's job is to allow steering knuckle movement while carrying the weight of the vehicle. I've had customers argue that the ball joint is fine because it passed the "relative movement" test. Fine. But if the rubber boot is cracked and grease is gone, it's only a matter of miles. I'd rather replace a cheap part now than pay for a tow truck, a damaged fender, and a front-end alignment later.

A misfire sends raw fuel into the exhaust. That fuel ignites inside the converter and overheats the ceramic substrate. Once the substrate melts or breaks apart, it can block the exhaust. The engine starts backfiring, fuel economy tanks, and the oxygen sensors get contaminated. On some cars, a completely clogged converter can cause the engine to stall and make it impossible to restart. That's the cascade: a $10 tube of spark plug lube or a $50 ignition coil can end up becoming a $1,600 exhaust repair plus labor.

This is the same "certainty premium" idea as the struts. Spending a little extra on the right part, or the right preparation, is a bargain compared to the uncertain cost of fixing the damage later.

I'm not saying FCS is garbage. I'm saying certainty has a price.

Before anyone calls me a snob, I'll be clear: I have never fully understood how FCS and other budget brands price their parts so low. My best guess is that they spend less on durability validation and production-level controls. That's fine if you're buying a part for a farm truck that drives three miles a day. But for a customer's daily driver? I'd rather sleep well.

And no, I'm not saying KYB is 100% defect-free. No brand is. I've rejected KYB parts too. But the rejection rate is different, and the engineering documentation on a KYB gas strut is more transparent. When I call KYB with a technical question, I get an answer I can use. That matters when a repair order is waiting.

The old backyard logic was: buy cheap, replace twice, still cheaper than a fancy brand. That made sense when labor was $40 an hour and your time had no value. It doesn't make sense when shop rates are $110 an hour and the customer needs the car by Tuesday.

So, bottom line: if you're comparing FCS vs KYB struts, don't just compare the price tags. Compare the cost of uncertainty. If you're doing the job yourself and have all the time in the world, maybe a budget strut is acceptable. But if you're charging someone for the repair, or if the car is a family member's only transport, pay for the part you can verify.

And while you're at it, check the ball joint boots, put the right lube on the spark plug boots, and don't ignore that converter code. Every one of those decisions is a bet. I've spent years looking at the outcomes of those bets. The ones who "saved money" usually end up paying twice.
