What a Quality Inspector Really Checks in KYB Struts, SBC Fuel Pumps, and How Water Pump Failures Get Misdiagnosed

Here's the bottom line: the brand name doesn't guarantee the part passes inspection. In 2024, my team reviewed 200+ unique part numbers and rejected roughly 4% of first deliveries from established manufacturers—including KYB struts and SBC fuel pumps. The label is not the spec.

Take it from someone who's reviewing 200+ new part numbers a year as a brand compliance manager at a mid-sized automotive parts distributor. I approve every supplier before the first purchase order, and I keep a sample of every rejected part on a shelf behind my desk. That shelf tells a simple story: well-known brands put out real defects, just less often than no-name imports. This article is about what I actually check and why you should do the same.

KYB Struts and Yamaha Tenere 700 KYB Suspension: The 4-Point Check

KYB is one of the strongest suspension brands in the aftermarket. I'd say about 60% of the struts we move wear the KYB label. But “strong brand” doesn't mean zero defects. Here's the four-point check I run on every KYB strut that comes into our warehouse:

  1. Rod surface condition. Look for pitting, scratches, or faint vertical rust lines around the rod. A 0.02mm nick can destroy a seal in 3,000 miles. I use a 20x loupe and a digital micrometer for this. If the surface isn't mirror-smooth, I reject it.
  2. Damping force balance. Left and right units on the same axle should feel close to equal. Without a dynamometer, you can do a rough hand test: compress the rod slowly, then let it rebound.   • Flange flatness. We see this a lot on remanufactured pumps. If the mounting flange is warped, it won't seal against the block no matter how much gasket you use. Put the flange on a surface plate and feel for rock.
  • Full pressure test. Bench testing at 4 psi won't catch a diaphragm that leaks at 6 psi. Hook the pump to a regulated air source and run it at the maximum pressure your engine needs. If pressure drops more than 0.5 psi over 30 seconds, the diaphragm is marginal.
  • Rocker arm spring sound. Twang the rocker arm spring. It should sound crisp, not dull. A dull spring is a fatigued spring, and it'll leave you up in the air at 70 mph.

A few years back, a customer returned the same SBC fuel pump three times. Our vendor tested it, said it was fine. We tested it, said it was fine. Finally, we installed it on a test engine and simulated a load—it delivered only 5.5 psi at wide-open throttle, and the carburetor's float needle couldn't handle that pressure. The pump wasn't the problem. The float valve was. But if we hadn't tested the system instead of the part, we would have blamed the pump forever.

The bottom line here: a fuel pump isn't defective just because it doesn't pass a bench check. Check the whole fuel system flow, not just the part.

Signs Your Water Pump Is Going Out (And Why You're Probably Missing Them)

People think a water pump fails because the bearing wears out. Actually, it's usually the reverse: the coolant degrades, loses its corrosion inhibitors, and the bearing dries out. The noise you hear during the final week is just the damage announcing itself. So by the time you notice the whirring, the pump is already dead.

Here are the early signs your water pump is going out:

  • A whirring or growl from the front of the engine, especially when the engine is cold and the coolant is thick.
  • Coolant residue around the weep hole. If you see orange or green crystals dried around it, the pump seal is already leaking—not “about to leak.”
  • Temperature creeping up at idle but dropping at highway speed. That points to low coolant flow, not a bad thermostat.
  • Pulley play. Remove the drive belt and try to rock the pulley up and down. More than 2mm of play means the internal bearing is finished.

I've watched a tiny water pump leak destroy a radiator, a fan clutch, and a timing belt on the same engine. The repair bill came to $1,800. The pump itself was $90. Catching it early is a no-brainer.

If you run a shop, add a cooling system pressure test to every vehicle over 60,000 miles. It takes 10 minutes with a hand pump and it finds the weep-hole leak that the visual check misses.

Grip Strut Plank and the Same Quality Logic

Here's a connection that might surprise you. We also use grip strut plank on our plant walkways and loading docks. Those metal panels with the serrated diamond surface are stamped from steel or aluminum, and they can fail if the base material is too thin or the cutting burr is too aggressive. When a shipment of grip strut plank arrives, we measure the thickness, check the length, verify the load rating, and visually scan for cracked teeth. My inspection depth depends on the documentation. OEM parts with PPAP or IATF 16949 paperwork get a reduced sampling plan—maybe 10 units per lot, because the supplier has proven their process. Aftermarket parts with no paperwork get 100% inspection on the first purchase and 10% inspection on every later lot. If the supplier won't take the time to document their process, I'm not going to trust them with my customers' money.

Also, be careful before blaming the part. A “bad” KYB strut can track incorrectly if the fasteners were torqued while the suspension was hanging. A replacement fuel pump can fail quickly if the gas tank was full of sediment. A water pump can overheat the engine when the real issue is a clogged radiator core. Take a system view. A quality part in an unhealthy system will die for no reason.

No-name brands don't automatically mean “bad,” and premium brands don't automatically mean “good.” The spec is the standard, the inspection is the proof.
