KYB Strut-Plus Components Included: A 9-Point Quality Checklist Before Installation

When I first started in automotive quality control, I assumed the final bench test caught every defect before a part left the plant. It didn't. In 2021, a batch of 1,200 strut assemblies reached a distributor with a spring-seat alignment issue that had passed three separate checks. The rework cost us $22,000 and pushed delivery dates back two weeks. That experience rewrote how I look at every unit that comes off the line.

Now, as quality/brand compliance manager at KYB, I review roughly 4,000 assemblies every month—most of them Strut-Plus units—before they're cleared for shipment. In Q1 2024, I rejected 2.4% of first-pass units for seal tolerance or alignment issues. Here's the thing, though: the defects we catch in the plant are not the ones that hurt customers. It's the ones that make it into a box, sit on a shelf for nine months, or get installed with a reused bearing. So this checklist covers the ground after our QC too.

When to Use This Checklist

Run this checklist any time you receive a KYB Strut-Plus assembly or any complete strut unit from our line. It's also a decent template for checking aftermarket suspension parts from other brands, but the part references here are specific to KYB. If you order a set of four, check every unit individually. Don't spot-check one and assume the rest are fine—that assumption is exactly how comebacks happen.

One note before we start: as of January 2025, KYB Strut-Plus part numbers follow the SR-XXXX and SM-XXXX format for front and rear assemblies. Check yours against the vehicle's VIN before you read any further.

Step 1: Match the Part Number—Twice

The first thing I ask every distributor to do is match the part number on the box against the laser-etched number on the strut body. The box label is just paper; the etching is the truth. We've seen returned units re-boxed in the wrong carton often enough that "factory sealed" no longer means anything to me.

Verify the part number against KYB's application guide before comparing it to the vehicle. A strut can physically mount but have a stroke that's too short for your trim level. Use the VIN. This one step eliminates most mismatches.

Step 2: Know What "Strut-Plus Components Included" Actually Means

Let's be precise about what's in the box. A KYB Strut-Plus assembly is a pre-assembled unit, so "components included" means:

  • Sealed strut cartridge (pre-filled with fluid and nitrogen)
  • Mounting bracket (pre-attached on most models)
  • Upper mount and thrust bearing where required
  • Dust boot and jounce bumper
  • Spring seat with isolator
  • Mounting hardware—nuts, bolts, washers

But here's the detail that trips people up: the coil spring is not included in every part number. KYB makes both loaded and non-loaded Strut-Plus assemblies. On a non-loaded unit, you reuse the original spring. The box doesn't always make this obvious. So ask "what's NOT included" before you complain about missing pieces. I've seen cars torn apart by a truthful part and a misleading product listing.

Step 3: Run the Rod Inspection

Run your finger along the polished strut rod, from top to bottom, slowly. A clean rod feels dead smooth—no nicks, no raised edges, no rough patches. A rod with a single impact nick or score mark will likely start seeping oil within six months. If you feel any rough spot, photograph it and file a claim before installation. Installing a scored rod means replacing the whole assembly later, and explaining that to a customer.

This is also a good time to confirm the rod's protective tube (where fitted) hasn't shifted in transit.

Step 4: Check Spring Seat Orientation

Here's a step most people ignore: the spring seat on a Strut-Plus unit has a specific rotational offset relative to the mounting bracket. There's usually a notch or indexed line. Check it with a straightedge.

When we implemented our updated bench inspection in 2022, we measured spring seat alignment on a sample of 50 units from each production batch. About 1 in 25 was rotated 10 to 15 degrees off spec. In a box, it's invisible. Bolted to the car, it throws steering geometry off and causes a pull.

It's a five-second fix on the bench. After installation, it's a half-day of work and an alignment bill.

Step 5: Verify Boot and Bumper—Installed, Not Just "Included"

Just because the packing list says "dust boot and jounce bumper included" doesn't mean both are installed. In a 2023 audit of 60 units, we found four where the bumper was sitting loose in the carton.

When you pick up the strut, the boot should be snug against the rod and the bumper seated and slightly compressed. If either is loose, seat it before installation. Skip this, and you'll get a metallic knock on the first pothole—plus a service writer who blames the part instead of the install.

Step 6: Rotate the Bearing and Listen

Front strut upper bearings need to rotate smoothly. Hold the spring seat with one hand, rotate the mounting flange with the other. It should move with steady resistance and no grating, ratcheting, or creaking.

Why does this matter? Because a notchy bearing produces a steering knock on the first drive. We've had installers reuse an old top mount to save money, hear noise the next morning, and call us saying the strut is bad. The strut was fine. The bearing was the problem. This fifteen-second check might feel redundant on a new unit, but it's your insurance against blaming the wrong part.

Step 7: Measure Compressed Length Against Spec

Pull out a tape measure. Measure from the base of the mounting bracket to the rod tip, and compare it with the spec printed on the product sheet in the box. A deviation of more than 3 mm is a red flag.

I don't have hard data on industry-wide defect rates for compressed-length errors. What I can tell you anecdotally is that across our own outgoing audits since 2022, roughly 1 in 40 units gets flagged on this check. Sometimes it's a paperwork issue. Sometimes it's the wrong unit. Either way, it's easier to solve before the suspension is back on the ground.

Step 8: Check the Date Code (The One Everyone Skips)

Find the date code stamped on the strut body, usually near the bracket. KYB's manufacturing date is a 5-digit Julian code. For example, "24251" means day 251 of 2024—September 7th.

Why should you care? Because the rubber components—boot, bumper, isolator—age regardless of whether the strut is in a box or on a car. Old stock develops stiff rubber and, in rare cases, micro-cracking. Per KYB's own storage guidelines, units sitting longer than 12 months should be bench-cycled before installation.

If your distributor hands you a unit with a date code over a year old, don't just accept it. Ask for fresher stock—or bench-cycle the one you've got. It's two minutes that can save a warranty claim later.

Step 9: Confirm Warranty Documentation Is in the Box

KYB Strut-Plus assemblies carry a limited lifetime warranty. But claiming it later starts with proof of purchase and, on some channels, the warranty card itself. Confirm the card is present, and photograph the box label along with your invoice.

This is also where I want to talk money for a second, because pricing transparency is something I take personally. If a vendor adds a core fee, a "hazardous material" surcharge, or a checkout-only handling fee on top of the advertised price, that's a red flag. The right price is the final price, listed up front.

That principle goes beyond suspension parts. Someone asked me recently: "how much to change an alternator?" The honest answer is parts plus labor plus diagnostic time—and it's more if the belt is cracked. Same with a racing radiator: the core price is the easy part; the filler neck, hoses, and fluid are where the real cost shows up. Ask what's NOT included before you agree to anything.

Common Mistakes I Still See in the Field

Reusing the old upper mount

False economy. A worn mount bearing transfers every knock into the new strut. Then the new strut gets blamed. Replace the mount while the assembly is out—the cost is tiny compared to doing the job twice.

Skipping the hardware test-fit

Dry-fit the included nuts and bolts on the mounting studs before you jack the car. Warehouse picks get mixed; hardware packs get damaged. It's a thirty-second check that prevents a stripped stud and an unscheduled parts run.

Assuming "basic" means "worse"

Last year I recommended an old-style mechanical thermostat to a customer who came in insisting on a digital unit. The digital one was "newer." It wasn't necessarily better for their 2005 truck. Read the spec sheet and the component list—not just the price tag—and you'll make the right call more often than not.

Not photographing the unboxing

Take photos of the box, the label, the strut body, and the date code before you install anything. If a warranty claim happens later—at year two or three—those photos are the difference between a smooth approval and a painful investigation.

Bottom line: nine checks, fifteen minutes. Part number, included components, rod condition, spring seat alignment, boot and bumper, bearing rotation, compressed length, date code, warranty paperwork. That's what I run on every batch that leaves my line—and it's what you should run before anything gets installed. The best inspection is the one that happens before the vehicle is on the ground.
