Are KYB Struts Any Good? A Ball Joint, Tacoma Leaf Spring, and Brake Rotor Disc Story

It started with a phone call at 4:40 on a Thursday. That is already a bad time for a shop that runs on appointments.

The caller owned a 2013 Toyota Tacoma with 178,000 miles. He towed a trailer to his son's motocross races, and he needed to leave by Monday. The truck had developed a clunk in the front, a wandering feel on the highway, a rear end that sat lower on one side, and a brake pedal that pulsed through the steering wheel. He asked if I could have it ready.

I told him I could not answer that until I saw it. He drove it in at 6:10 that evening. This story is what happened between that call and the test drive. It is also the honest answer to a common question: are KYB struts any good?

What is a ball joint on a truck?

I started with the front clunk. I put the truck on the lift, got the front wheels off the ground, and grabbed each tire at the six and twelve o'clock positions. When I rocked the right front tire, there was a loose knock. The right lower ball joint had play, and its rubber boot was torn.

A ball joint is a steel ball captured in a socket. On a truck, it connects the steering knuckle to the control arm. The joint has to allow the wheel to steer left and right while it also moves up and down with the suspension. It has to do that without excess play for many thousands of miles. On a truck, the lower ball joint also carries a large share of the vehicle weight.

If a lower ball joint separates, the result is not a gradual pull to the side. The knuckle drops, the wheel folds, and you can lose control before you understand what happened. That is why I check ball joints first on any truck with a clunk, wandering steering, or uneven tire wear.

This Tacoma needed both lower ball joints. The left one still moved, but not by much. The right one moved too much.

The brake rotor disc problem

Next came the brakes. Before removing a front brake rotor disc, I checked the caliper hardware while the wheels were off. The outside pads looked okay. The inside pads did not. One inner pad was down to about two millimeters, and the brake rotor disc face had the blue-purple color that means severe heat.

I assumed the rotor was simply worn out because the pads were old. That was half right. The rotor was below minimum thickness and had to be replaced. But the real problem was a seized caliper slide pin. The brake caliper was not floating evenly, so it pressed harder on one side and overheated that rotor disc.

Why does this matter? Because if I had installed a new brake rotor disc without fixing the seized slide pin, the new disc would have started to pulsate again within a month. It would look brand new, but it would slowly ruin itself. The fix was new rotor discs, pads, hardware, and a cleaned and greased caliper guide pin.

I almost did not order the caliper hardware because I assumed a rotor and pad swap was enough. I am glad I checked.

The Tacoma leaf spring that took the weekend

Behind the brakes, the rear of the Tacoma was too low. The Tacoma leaf spring on the driver's side had lost its arch. The leaf spring stack was almost inverted, and the axle was sitting close to the bump stop. That explains the rear sway and the way the truck wandered with a trailer behind it.

The Tacoma leaf spring is not just a piece of spring steel. It also locates the axle side to side, so a sagging spring changes axle movement. Replacing a spring pack is a real undercar job. We ordered a pair of replacement springs, new u-bolts, and new hardware on Friday morning.

The driver's side came out fine. The passenger side was the surprise. The front bolt that holds the spring eye was rusted into the bushing. After penetrant, heat, and careful persuasion, the bolt still snapped. It happens. That is the kind of thing that makes a rush job feel like gambling.

The local dealer had one spring hanger bracket left and could get it to us by Saturday afternoon. That saved the weekend. We replaced the hanger, cut the old bolt out, and moved on.

Are KYB struts any good?

I need to address the subject that probably got you here: are KYB struts any good?

The customer asked me the same thing after he saw the front shock absorbers on the estimate. I did not give him a salesman answer.

KYB is an original-equipment suspension supplier. That matters, because it means the company designs shocks and struts against a factory engineering standard, not just a parts catalog. The front end of this Tacoma uses coil-over shock assemblies that many suppliers call struts, and we fitted KYB replacements.

Are KYB struts any good? In my experience, yes. They are not a magic ride. They will not fix a worn ball joint or a bad tire. They will restore a factory-like feel if the rest of the suspension is healthy. That is what we needed here.

The customer was familiar with KYB for a different reason. His son raced motocross, and the factory suspension on the bike used KYB components. That is where KYB motocross suspension gets its reputation. It handles hard impacts, square-edge bumps, and repeated landing loads. I told him the truck strut and the motocross fork are very different parts, but they come from the same manufacturing culture. If a company can handle motocross landings, a pothole is not the thing that scares me.

Monday morning test drive

We finished late Sunday. I kept the truck overnight and drove it first thing Monday morning, before the customer arrived.

I did a mix of city streets and a highway loop that has a rough railroad crossing. The front end stayed quiet. The brake pedal was firm, and the steering wheel did not shiver when I stopped from seventy. The rear of the truck sat level. No clunk, no brake pulse, no wandering.

The customer arrived at 6:50 a.m., twenty minutes before his planned departure. I went over the work order with him: two lower ball joints, front KYB struts, replacement rear leaf springs, new brake rotor discs, pads, and hardware. He looked at the old parts on the floor, paid, loaded the trailer, and left.

Three days later, he called from the other end of the trip. He said the truck drove like a different vehicle. No clunk, no brake wobble, no white-knuckle moments on the highway. The only reason he called was to ask how often he should grease the new ball joints. We had already centered the steering wheel with an alignment, so he could just enjoy the motocross weekend.

The lesson from an 84-hour repair

I have handled more than two hundred rush jobs over the last few years, and this one is a good reminder that when you have a deadline, you cannot inspect too early or too carefully.

The mistake I almost made was treating the brake rotor disc as a standalone part. Rotors do not usually warp by themselves. They warp because something else in the brake system is not moving correctly.

Also, stop acting like a part is bad just because it is aftermarket. The game changed. KYB has been an OE supplier for decades, and that changes the old aftermarket assumptions. But the fundamentals have not changed: a ball joint is still a ball joint, and worn suspension parts only get worse.

So are KYB struts any good? Yes, when the rest of the system is healthy and the installation is done right. That weekend proved it. A good strut is not supposed to be a miracle. It is supposed to do its job quietly, consistently, and without drama. This Tacoma left the shop doing exactly that.
