Here's the thing: most part failures trace back to what happens before the part goes on the vehicle, not after. This is the 5-step checklist I run when suspension, exhaust, or charging components land in front of me. It applies whether you're a shop foreman, a technician, or a serious DIYer.

Step 1: Verify Shocks and Struts Before Mounting

  3. Flange flatness. Set the flange on a flat surface. If it rocks, it will leak. An exhaust leak ahead of the O2 sensor triggers a check engine light and turns a simple install into a diagnostic headache.

Step 3: Load-Test the Alternator Before It Goes In

  • Start the engine. Output should be 13.8V to 14.4V at idle.
  • Turn on the headlights, AC fan, and rear defroster. Voltage will dip, then recover. If it stays below 13V under load, the alternator is underperforming.

Step 4: Know What Causes a Fuel Pump to Go Bad

Voltage issues. A corroded ground or failing relay drops voltage to the pump. The motor runs slower, draws more current, and overheats.

Ethanol-related corrosion. In humid climates, ethanol-blended fuel attracts moisture, and that moisture corrodes internal components.

So before you replace a fuel pump, measure fuel pressure with a gauge. Key on, engine off: you should see 40-60 psi depending on the vehicle spec. If pressure is present but the engine still stumbles under load, the problem may be the filter, a relay, or a wiring fault—not the pump. Swapping a healthy pump for a new one is expensive, and it fixes nothing.

Step 5: Authenticate the Part Before You Trust the Box

This is the step that gets skipped most, by DIYers and professional shops alike. They see the part number on the box and move on. I stopped doing that in 2022, when a vendor we'd used for years shipped a batch where the box labels matched, but the internal valve springs didn't meet our spec. We wrote 'OEM-grade' in the purchase order. They read that as 'meets minimum requirements.' We meant 'identical to factory original.' It took a load test failure to discover the difference.

My verification routine:

  1. Match the part number stamped on the unit to the part number on the box. Read the stamping, don't just glance at it.
  2. Measure the critical mounting dimensions. Fitment databases are a starting point, not gospel. When the spec sheet and the physical part disagree, the physical part wins.
